General Manager ALSC Appointed as Mental Health Advocate for the Mental Health Foundation Australia

Updated: Dec 31, 2025

Since 2020, our General Manager, Shona Leppanen-Gibson, has had the privilege of working alongside the Mental Health Foundation Australia (MHFA) in various community engagement roles, including as an Ambassador and Attaché. Her commitment to mental health advocacy has long focused on dismantling the stigma that keeps too many people from reaching out. Shona reminds us that talking about mental health is not only okay—it is essential.

Shona's New Role as a Mental Health Advocate

We’re pleased to share that Shona has recently been appointed as a Mental Health Advocate under MHFA’s National Mental Health Advocates Program for 2025–2028. This program brings together 51 individuals from across Australia—professionals, carers, educators, and youth leaders—who are united by a shared dedication to inclusive wellbeing and community connection.

The Importance of Advocacy

These advocates, including Shona, embody the compassion, dedication, and innovation central to the mission of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). Their work reflects a deep understanding of the complexities surrounding mental health challenges and the importance of creating supportive environments where individuals can thrive. Each advocate brings unique experiences and insights, contributing to a richer dialogue about mental health in Australia.

Shona’s involvement in this initiative reflects the work she continues to do through the Australian Leadership Skills Centre. Her community work helps break down stigma, foster open conversations, and support environments where mental health is treated with care and respect. She joins a network of advocates whose lived experiences and diverse perspectives enrich the national dialogue on mental health.

Building a Supportive Community

Creating a supportive community is vital for mental health. It involves understanding the needs of individuals and providing the necessary resources. Advocates like Shona play a crucial role in this process. They help to bridge the gap between those who need support and the services available to them.

Advocacy is not just about raising awareness; it’s about action. It’s about ensuring that mental health services are accessible to everyone. This includes advocating for policy changes and promoting mental health education in schools and workplaces.

The Role of Education in Mental Health

Education is a powerful tool in combating stigma. By educating ourselves and others about mental health, we can create a more understanding and supportive environment. Mental health education should be integrated into school curriculums and workplace training programs. This ensures that everyone has the knowledge and skills to support themselves and others.

The Future of Mental Health Advocacy

As we look to the future, the role of mental health advocates will only become more critical. With increasing awareness of mental health issues, there is a growing need for individuals who can lead conversations and drive change. Shona’s appointment as a Mental Health Advocate is a step in the right direction.

Advocates will continue to work towards a society where mental health is prioritized. They will strive to ensure that everyone feels safe to talk about their mental health without fear of judgment.

Conclusion

Shona Leppanen-Gibson’s journey with the Mental Health Foundation Australia is inspiring. Her dedication to mental health advocacy is paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive community. We are proud to support her in this important work.
