RPL Pathways
While structured learning is an important part of professional development, many individuals come to their qualification journey with years - sometimes decades - of valuable workplace experience. This experience matters. It shapes capability, informs decision‑making, and builds practical skills that cannot be learned from a textbook alone.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the process that acknowledges this experience. It allows learners to demonstrate competence through evidence gathered from real work, rather than repeating learning they have already mastered. For many people, RPL is not just a faster pathway - it is a meaningful one as the process helps the learner review their work history and in the process confirm and validate their own skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Why RPL Matters
RPL respects the learner’s history. It recognises the skills they have developed through:
workplace tasks
leadership responsibilities
informal training
projects and initiatives
problem‑solving and decision‑making
communication and collaboration
industry‑specific experience
Instead of asking learners to start from scratch, RPL allows them to build on what they already know. This can shorten the time required to complete a qualification, reduce duplication, and create a more personalised learning experience.
But RPL is not simply a shortcut. It is a rigorous, evidence‑based process that ensures learners genuinely meet the competency requirements of the qualification. When done well, RPL strengthens confidence, validates capability, and highlights areas where further development may be beneficial.
Quality Assurance in RPL
As a Registered Training Organisation, we follow strict national standards to ensure that RPL is conducted with integrity, fairness, and consistency. Every RPL application is assessed against the Principles of Assessment and the Rules of Evidence, ensuring that:
evidence is valid, directly relating to the unit requirements
evidence is authentic, demonstrating the learner’s own work
evidence is current, reflecting recent capability
evidence is sufficient, providing a complete picture of competence
We return to the source documents - the training package requirements, the assessment conditions, and the competency standards - every time we conduct an RPL assessment. Even if the training package has not changed, we review our RPL tools and processes to ensure they remain current, relevant, and aligned with industry expectations.
This commitment to quality ensures that learners receive a qualification that is credible, nationally recognised, and reflective of genuine capability. It also helps us tailor each RPL experience to the individual candidate.
RPL Informed by Real Industry Experience
Our work as consultants across numerous industries gives us a unique perspective when assessing RPL. Because we understand how workplaces operate - the pressures, the expectations, the realities - we can assess evidence with insight and context. We don’t look for idealised examples. We look for real ones.
This means learners can present evidence that reflects the true nature of their work: the challenges they’ve navigated, the decisions they’ve made, the leadership they’ve demonstrated, and the outcomes they’ve achieved. Even when things go wrong, these experiences are invalauble to the RPL process. And it reflects the way that people learn in real life - by doing.
Our industry experience helps us recognise competence in all its forms, not just the textbook version.
Supporting Learners Through the RPL Process
RPL can feel daunting for some learners, especially if they are unsure what evidence to provide or how to present it. That’s why we offer full support throughout the process.
We help learners:
identify suitable evidence
map their experience to the unit requirements
understand what assessors are looking for
prepare documentation and workplace examples
fill any gaps through targeted learning or assessment
Our approach is collaborative, supportive, and flexible. We work closely with learners to ensure the process is clear, achievable, and aligned with their goals.
RPL as Part of a Tailored Learning Journey
RPL is not an isolated process. It is part of a broader learning journey that blends experience, new knowledge, coaching, and practical application.
Some learners complete several units through RPL and undertake training for others. Some begin with RPL and discover areas where they want deeper learning. Others use RPL to validate their existing capability before stepping into more advanced qualifications.
Whatever the pathway, RPL ensures that learning is efficient, personalised, and respectful of the learner’s background.
A Qualification That Reflects the Whole Person
Ultimately, RPL ensures that a qualification reflects the learner’s full story - not just the part completed through formal training. It acknowledges the years of effort, the lessons learned, the skills developed, and the contributions made in real workplaces.
It is a powerful way to honour experience while opening the door to new opportunities.
